One of the key events organized by the Ukrainian Institute within the framework of the bilateral Ukraine–Austria Year of Culture was the concert of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra “Schubert. Lyatoshynsky. Kühr.”, featuring Ukrainian soloist Andrii Pavlov (violin). The concert took place on May 29 in Vienna.

The programme featured three symphonic works representing three different periods in the history of musical culture: the Third Symphony by Borys Lyatoshynsky, the founder of modern Ukrainian music (performed in its original, uncensored version); the Seventh (“Unfinished”) Symphony by Franz Schubert, the first composer of the Romantic era; and Movimenti for violin and orchestra by contemporary, Austrian composer Gerd Kühr. The concert was conducted by Duncan Ward (United Kingdom), one of the brightest stars of the new generation of conductors, with Andrii Pavlov (violin), soloist of the National Ensemble “Kyiv Camerata”.

“The history of interaction between Ukrainian and Austrian musical cultures has deep roots: such western regions of Ukraine as Bukovyna, Galicia, and Transcarpathia were once part of the Austrian Empire and Austria-Hungary. It was in Lviv and Chernivtsi that Austrian musicians worked (for example, Franz Mozart, Jan Ruckgaber, Ernst Pauer), making a significant contribution to the development of professional Ukrainian music in Western Ukraine,” noted Yurii Chekan, musicologist, Doctor of Arts.
